Project Update September 2025, 12.09.2025
The Project COREEL, co-financed by the Interreg Estonia–Latvia 2021–2027 Programme, is tackling the problem of derelict and abandoned fishing gear (DFG) in Estonian-Latvian waters. Beyond detection and removal, COREEL is building systems for sorting, collecting, and recycling gear, while raising awareness among fishers, ports, municipalities, and waste managers to prevent future loss.
Progress – Detection & Removal (WP1)
Sonar & ROV trials were carried out in Väinameri and the Gulf of Riga. The results showed that sonar can detect gear at a much larger scale than traditional dragging method.
ROV development began, equipping a remotely operated vehicle with cutting, hooking and lifting tools to detach and lift gear safely.
Data analysis combined fisheries statistics, weather, and port locations, producing the first DFG hotspot map to guide operations.
Outcome: A draft action plan for detecting and removing lost gear, with technical requirements and workflows defined.
Progress – Collection & Recycling (WP2)
Port surveys in 7 sites in Estonia and 7 in Latvia mapped existing facilities and needs.
Networks built with port operators, waste companies, and fisheries groups, including solutions for fishers outside formal ports.
Awareness activities: workshops and community meetings have already reached dozens of stakeholders.
Preparations underway to establish 4 permanent collection points (2 in EE, 2 in LV).
Outcome: Baseline study of current infrastructure and a draft plan for new systems.
Key Year 1 Results:
- Faster, safer gear detection & removal model.
- First DFG hotspot map.
- New cooperation networks across EE & LV.
- Four future collection sites selected.
Next Steps:
- Year 2 will focus on sonar mapping, gear removal, collection point establishment, and stakeholder training to ensure solutions work in real conditions.
